Molicel Li-ion Cells for Long-Range Drone Packs
Molicel cells come from E-One Moli Energy in Taiwan, a company that has made lithium cells for decades. In FPV the name means one thing: high capacity that still delivers serious current. R5D5 carries three Molicel 21700 cells — the P42A, P45B and P50B.
Why Long-Range Builds Use Li-ion
A Li-ion pack stores noticeably more energy per gram than a LiPo of the same weight. The trade-off is burst current: Li-ion won't feed hard freestyle punches the way LiPo does. For a drone that cruises for distance, that's the right deal — more minutes in the air, less weight to carry.
Molicel 21700 Models Compared
All three share the 21700 size, 21 mm wide and 70 mm long, so they swap into the same pack design:
- P42A: 4200 mAh and 45 A. The proven workhorse of long-range packs.
- P45B: 4500 mAh at the same 45 A. More flight time without losing current.
- P50B: 5000 mAh and 60 A. The top of the range, for heavier drones that need both.
Building a Pack From Molicel Cells
Cells in series add voltage, cells in parallel add capacity and current. A 6S2P pack of P45B gives 22.2 V nominal, 9000 mAh and up to 90 A. Before building, follow three rules:
- Use one model from one batch. Mixed cells age unevenly and the weakest one drags the pack down.
- Match voltages within a few hundredths of a volt before connecting cells in parallel.
- Size the pack for your current draw, not just for capacity.
Ready-made options are in the rechargeable drone batteries category.
Charging and Storage
Charge to 4.2 V per cell and land around 3.0 V under load. The datasheet allows lower, but deep discharges shorten cell life. For storage, leave cells at 3.6–3.8 V. A balance charger with a Li-ion profile is essential — the drone battery chargers category has suitable models.
FAQ
-
How do I spot a fake Molicel cell?
Fakes usually weigh less and fail a capacity test well below the rated mAh. Buy from sellers with traceable supply and test a new batch before building a pack.
-
Can Molicel cells be soldered?
Spot welding nickel strips is the safer method. A soldering iron heats the cell for several seconds, which can damage its internal structure and safety vent.
-
Do Li-ion packs work in cold weather?
Yes, but capacity and current drop in the cold. Keep packs warm until takeoff and never charge them below 0 °C.
